Egyptian-Armenian artist Chant Avedissian has a huge international following, eager for his witty, nostalgic interpretations of Egypt’s Golden Age, from King Farouk’s early reign to the death of President Nasser - an era when Egypt hungrily pursued modernity. The iconic figures in Avedissian's canvases include legendary singers Om Kulthoum and Asmahan; screen sirens Shadia and Hind Rostom; heart-throbs Farid al-Atrash and Abdel Halim Hafez; statesmen such as Gamal Abdel Nasser; everyday figures from the 1950s and 60s – sportsmen, women, soldiers; as well as the ancient hieroglyphs, scenes of rural life and advertising that instantly evoke the charm, rhythm and energy of this fascinating culture.
