Published to accompany a major exhibition co-curated by Fatima Mernissi and Rose Issa that opened in Barcelona, Spain and travelled to Lyon, France. Mernissi explored historical portrayals of the harem from the 18th to 20th centuries, while Rose Issa introduced the “New Scheherazades – contemporary women artists from Islamic backgrounds, who use a highly individual visual language to comment on their societies.
